A Practical Look at the First Week
The first seven days after installing a barrier trench tell you more than any manual. You watch where the soil settles, where the rain pools, and which corner of the vegetable bed still shows fresh mounds. This post walks through what that first week actually looks like when you are testing a non-lethal mole fence on a small suburban plot.
We set up a 40-meter perimeter around the main raised beds using recycled galvanized mesh, buried 60 centimeters deep with a 15-centimeter outward fold at the base. The idea is simple: moles dig horizontally, so the fold creates a shelf they hit and turn back from. The first two days showed no activity near the fence line, which felt promising. By day three, a small tunnel appeared just outside the fold, confirming the moles were testing the barrier rather than ignoring it.
The practical decisions came down to three things. First, the soil type: heavy clay meant the trench walls kept collapsing while we worked, so we had to brace the sides with scrap boards. Second, the gate area: we left a 1.2-meter gap for wheelbarrow access, and that gap needed a separate buried section that we could lift. Third, the surface drainage: after a light rain, water pooled along the trench line, so we added a shallow gravel channel to keep the base dry.
By the end of the week, the fence had stopped about 80 percent of the surface activity. The remaining tunnels appeared near the compost pile, where the soil is looser and warmer. That is not a failure of the fence; it is a reminder that barriers work best when paired with habitat management. Moving the compost bin 6 meters away and raising it on pallets reduced the attraction within two days.
What surprised us most was how little maintenance the fence needed once the soil settled. A few spots needed tamping down after the first watering, and one corner required an extra stake where the mesh had pulled loose. Nothing structural, nothing that needed a redesign. The lesson from the first week is that a mole fence is not a one-time install; it is a system you adjust as you learn your own soil and the local mole routes.
